The UK’s northernmost country, Scotland has recently seen crime levels fall, according to figures published by Police Scotland.

Despite a slight rise in violent and sexual crime, just 49 murders were committed in the 12 months up to March 2016; the lowest level in Scotland’s recorded history.

However, inner city areas are still blighted by crime, with Glasgow City Centre South recording an incredible 14,580 recorded crimes per 10,000 population. Certain areas of Edinburgh, including Princes Street and Leith Street, are also frequent trouble hotspots, with theft the most common crime committed.

Overall, Police Scotland recorded 6,775 of non-sexual violent crimes between 2015 and 2016. This was the third-highest of any UK force, behind only the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police, but it should be remembered that Police Scotland covers the entire population of Scotland.

In recent years, fire incidents attended by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have decreased.
