The East Midlands, which has a population of approximately 4.5 million people, is served by the Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire forces under a collaboration arrangement.
According to recent statistics, Lincolnshire is the ‘murder’ capital of the East Midlands. Between September 2015 and September 2016, 16 murders were recorded. That was more than Leicestershire, where there were 13 murders, Nottinghamshire where 12 homicides were recorded, Derbyshire with 11 and Northamptonshire at 8.
Lincolnshire also saw a 2% rise in overall crime, 15% in robbery and 16% in weapons possession. In comparison, during January 2017, Nottinghamshire recorded the highest crime rate out of the five counties, with a total of 9,096 recorded crimes. Despite higher homicide figures, Lincolnshire ranked the lowest out of all five counties in January 2017 for recorded crimes.
Stabbings in Nottingham increased by 25% in 2016, and knife crime in Derbyshire also rose by almost 20%. In comparison to other forces in England and Wales, the five East Midland police forces have some of the lowest recorded crime figures for the start of 2017.
